Instability of Supported Platinum Nanoparticles in Low-Temperature Fuel Cells

This paper discusses the mechanisms of surface area loss of supported platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts in lowtemperature fuel cells. It is argued that submonolayer dissolution of Pt nanoparticles governs the surface area loss at high voltages by increasing the loss of Pt from carbon and coarsening of Pt nanoparticles on carbon.

High-temperature Fuel Cells

The molten carbonate fuel cell operates at approximately 650 °C (1200 °F). The high operating temperature is needed to achieve sufficient conductivity of the carbonate electrolyte, yet allow the use of low-cost metal cell components. A benefit associated with this high temperature is that noble metal catalysts are not required for the cell electrochemical oxidation and reduction processes. Molt...

Low energy plasma treatment of a proton exchange membrane used for low temperature fuel cells

A low energy (∼30 V) plasma treatment of Nafion, a commercial proton exchange membrane used for low temperature fuel cells, is performed in a helicon radiofrequency (13.56 MHz) plasma system. For argon densities in the 109–1010 cm−3 range, the water contact angle (hydrophobicity) of the membrane surface linearly decreases with an increase in the plasma energy dose, which is maintained below 5.1...

Effect of carbonate anions on Bi-doped Ca2Ru2O7 pyrochlores that are potential cathode catalysts for low temperature carbonate fuel cells

This ex situ electrochemical study investigates how the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on Bi-doped Ca2Ru2O7 pyrochlore catalysts is affected by the addition of carbonate to the aqueous KOH (1 mol dm ) electrolyte. The parent Ca2Ru2O7 catalyst has been previously reported to be selective towards the generation of CO3 2– on the reaction of O2 with CO2 (in the presence of H2O) at the cathode of l...

Propylene hydration in high-temperature water

The hydration of propylene with sulfuric acid catalyst in high-temperature water was investigated using a flow reaction system. The major product was isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Diisopropyl ether, n-propyl alcohol and C6 olefins were produced as byproducts. The temperature dependency of reaction rate for propylene disappearance was measured in the range of 280-400°C at a fixed pressure of 30 MPa. ...
